Toward Reconciliation: What the Calls to Action Mean for Health Data Organizations
HDRN Canada recognizes its shared responsibility within its network and with organizations across the administrative health datascape to support reconciliation and advance the Calls to Action in Canada. As part of that responsibility HDRN Canada’s First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Data Practices Team reviewed four Indigenous-led reports that provide direction and calls to action for organizations in Canada and around the world. The review examined how HDRN Canada and its member organizations’ current work, goals and resources align with recommendations and calls to action arising from provincial, territorial and national inquiries into the treatment of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada.
Join Meaghan Pike and Victoria Martinez, from the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Data Practices Team, to learn how this review provides a foundation for meaningful action, continued learning and collaboration as HDRN Canada and its members work to advance reconciliation through their work with administrative health data. It also offers a potential model for other health data organizations seeking to reflect on their own roles, responsibilities and opportunities to advance reconciliation through their work.
About the Speakers:
Victoria Martinez is a Data Analyst at the Health Research Data Platform – Saskatchewan, an HDRN Canada member organization. Her work is driven by an interest in how administrative data can help improve and understand public policy. She works with the HDRN Canada First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Data Practices and Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Teams with a particular focus on improving data-about-data to better serve communities.
Meaghan Pike is the Data Sharing and Privacy Coordinator at DataNB, where she has supported the secure sharing and governance of administrative personal information and personal health information since 2021. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resources and previously spent more than a decade with the University of New Brunswick Secretariat, leading institutional projects and working closely with the Right to Information and Privacy Office. In her current role, Meaghan collaborates with data business owners and custodians across government, academia, Indigenous organizations and communities, and the health sector to coordinate data sharing agreements, privacy reviews and data transfer processes. She supports research and evaluation initiatives that promote the responsible use of personal information, including Indigenous-led projects that emphasize respectful collaboration, data stewardship and Indigenous data sovereignty.
